Accomodation

Hostel World, my preferred accommodation as a young traveller are hostels due accessibility and low cost to travelers. Hostelworld is a search engine for hostels all around the world. You can book directly on their website, and you have access to travelers review, picture of the hostels and information about the different amenities!

AirBnB, imagine staying in a treehouse in the middle of the Costa Rican jungle or a renovated warehouse turned apartment in San Francisco? AirBnb offers cozy and “feels like home” options for the traveler. This is great for short and long terms stays and great for larger travel groups too.

Communication

Google Translate, unless you are a truly talented polyglot, it's nearly impossible to know every language in the world! Google Translate has helped me on so many occasions to speak with locals, hail a taxi, asking for the toilet or order food.

Babbel, if you are keen on learning a new language, I cannot recommend Babbel enough! While there are many free language learning apps, Babbel has really comprehensive language lessons, like “phrases for your next vacation” or “local slang” that are easy and interactive. I can learn on the go via my phone or on my laptop, and even download offline courses when I have no WiFi

WhatsApp, Exchange real-time “text” messages while abroad with a Wi-fi or 3G connection. You can also call other Whatsapp users for free

Skype, free video calling or call to landlines. Phone calls as low as $0.20 with a Wi-fi or 3G connection.

Flights

Skyscanner,Skyscanner is a global search engine that enables people to find comparisons for flights, hotels and car hire. The service is free to users and directs you to the airline, hotel, car hire provider or travel agency to complete the booking process

Hopper, tracks and monitors flights and tells you the best time to book, so you can get the best price! This is great for those who just aren’t too sure about the best time to book or have a trip planned out far in advance .
Skiplagged, the ever controversial but useful search engine! I love using Skiplagged to see where I shave off extra money on flights. I’ve booked flights through Skiplagged and have been able to save between $50-100 on previous flights.

Directions

Rome 2 Rio, this app helps you discover how to best get anywhere via bus, train, plane, car, or ferry. It will give you the estimated time, best routes and prices, so you can weigh your options!
