Top 3 Tips to Learning a New Language

“Sorry, do you speak English?”

Language barriers can be a major deterrent for some to travel internationally!

Learning a “ Hello/Thank You/Yes, No” in the local language while might seem elementary, goes a long way. What can you do to feel confident and prepare for your next trip?

These are my 3 Tips to Learning a New Language for your next trip

Top 3 tips to learning a new language

1. Download a language learning app

There are a number of different language learning apps that can help you master a new language. I was recently introduced to a language learning app called Babbel. Babbel is a paid language learning subscription service that allows you to take your language courses via the app or desktop. They currently have 14 languages such as Spanish, German, French and Russian. It is one of the interactive and comprehensive language apps. You can even download lessons offline, so no need to worry about WiFi connection.

2. Learn language basics—Not only is it respectful but you will be less of a target if you can learn some key phrases in the local language. Note: Some common phrases to include should be where is the nearest hospital, police station or embassy.

3. Use Google Translate to learn correct pronunciation

So you’ve mastered a few basic phrases, congrats! But you’ll want to make sure that you can pronounce said phrases. Google Translate functionality allows you to listen to the correct  pronunciation. I go through the exercise of repeating words a few times until I feel confident I’ve mastered the correct pronunciation.

So take the chance, you never know where a hello/hola/bonjour might lead you!
